African Queen 2.0

African Queen 2.0

In the sequel to her 2021 album African Queen, the queen of bolobedu house delivers a set of slappers once again. Limpopo’s bolobedu sound, with its defining high-pitched synths and Auto-Tuned vocals, dominates the project, getting embellished by amapiano’s log drum on tracks like “Njalo,” “Zwafhela Zwofhela,” and “Thaidzo.” The guest list to this party consists of frequent collaborator Master KG and surprise guests like Blaq Diamond, Big Zulu, and Yaba Buluku Boyz. “Milandu Bhe” is a full-circle moment for the hitmaker, as the queen connects with her childhood icon, Shangaan electro pioneer Penny Penny (aka Papa Penny), for a remake of his 1994 hit. Slow songs like the R&B-tinged “No Mbaisa,” the Afrobeats-leaning “Mafunoni,” and the acoustic “Outro” act as breathers in an album that is designed for nights out and the festivities that come with them.
